Authority in Jesus—Two2Grow, Saturday, August 29
“And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues.” Mark 16:17 NKJV
My first personal encounter with the demonic is still a vivid memory to me. Growing up in a pastor’s home, we sometimes had people living with us who had various challenges and problems. One time, we had a person staying with us whom I later found out was battling the demonic in their life.
One day, while the person was in our house and I was trying to go to sleep, I sensed that my room was filled with a dark and evil presence. It was so real that I could have cut it with a knife. I tried to sleep so that I would get away from it, but it was too much. I had seen my mother rebuke the devil before and had also been in church services where people spoke the name of Jesus. So I knelt by my bedside, and I remember that as I did, I felt like someone large and evil was standing just behind me, almost leaning over me. I just said what I had heard others say: “I take authority over you in the name of Jesus. Leave my room now.”
There was no struggle or fight. In an instant, the peace of God filled the room. My body was at peace, and I was overcome with great joy and thankfulness for Jesus’ victory over evil.
Since then, Emelie and I have seen the power in the name of Jesus to dispel darkness and set people free. You don’t need a special spiritual gift or a degree in theology. Jesus said that using His name is for everyone who believes in Him.
Today, don’t let the devil bully you. Don’t allow fear to have the final word. Speak the name of Jesus. Stand your ground in Jesus’ authority and see the devil flee.
Jesus, thank You for defeating the devil and all the power of evil. Open my eyes to Your victory and lead me to people who need to be set free. In Your name, amen.
