Build on the Rock—Two2Grow, Friday, August 28
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Matthew 7:24 NIV
I grew up as a pastor’s kid in a Christian home and have always believed in Jesus, but I wasn’t very interested in living for Him. In my late teens, my older brother, who was on fire for the Lord, invited me to another church that had a Thursday night Bible school. I didn’t want to go because I had fun stuff going on in my life. I will never forget what my brother said: “Mikael, soon you will graduate high school and move out from home, but you don’t have any foundation to build your life on. You need the Word of God.”
God used my brother to wake me up to the fact that I was totally unstable and needed to build my life on God’s Word. I joined the evening Bible school, and it changed the direction of my life.
In Jesus’ famous parable of the housebuilder, He says that those who build their lives on His Word are like a man building his house on a rock. Yet those who do not build their lives on His Word are like a man building his house on sand. The unifying denominator in both is that “the rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against” both houses. Notice that! Jesus doesn’t promise us that when we build our lives on His Word, it will protect us from the problems and temptations of life. No. But it will make us strong in them.
Believers face the same hardships as everyone else: sickness, financial problems, relational challenges, untimely deaths, persecution, and so on. But when we have invested time in God’s Word and put it into practice, we have a solid foundation that will stand no matter what we face.
I am so grateful that I took time to build my life on God’s Word!
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Word. Help me to give it my highest priority and put it into practice so that my life will have a solid foundation. In Jesus’ name, amen.
