Spiritual Warfare // Part 6

Passage: Ephesians 6:10-18
Service Type:

Today, we continue our study of Spiritual Warfare with a look at another aspect of our weaponry: the Armor of God.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. /// Ephesians 6:10-18 (NKJV)

Most people look at the Armor of God metaphorically. In other words, they don’t think that it should be taken as a literal weapon of our warfare. But, the scripture tells us that we are to “take up” the armor of God. The Greek word used here means to literally:

The same word is used to describe Jesus being taken up into heaven, Paul being taken on board a ship, the tabernacle of Israel being carried. Since the attacks against us by the world, the flesh, and the devil are not metaphorical but real, our armor is real and is to be put on. Decisions determine focus and action. When we take time to set our mind on the armor of God and to determine that it is going to direct us into God’s victory and security, we are determining outcomes rather than simply responding to them. Soldiers prepare for war long before they encounter it. We prepare for war before we encounter it so that we know how we will respond in the day of the enemy’s attack.

Jesus said that it was the Father’s good pleasure to give us the kingdom (Luke 12:32). Yet, the violent take it by force (Matt. 11:12). Why? Because there are adversaries to God’s will for our lives. The Bible tells us to “run in such a way as to win the race” (1 Cor. 9:24). There must be a way to run and not win so focus and preparation are necessary. Paul told us to “press toward the mark for the high calling of God in Christ Jesus”. If we have to “press” there must be obstacles. Pastor Parkey’s first pastor used to say that “cruisematics” are those who are seeking to just cruise through life never obtain the high calling. Do you know why the Armor of God is so effective? Because it is the same armor Jesus put on to come to the earth!

The LORD looked and was displeased that there was no justice. He saw that there was no man; He was amazed that there was no one to intercede. So His own arm brought salvation, and His own righteousness sustained Him. He put on righteousness like a breastplate, and the helmet of salvation on His head; He put on garments of vengeance and wrapped Himself in a cloak of zeal. So He will repay according to their deeds: fury to His enemies, retribution to His foes, and recompense to the islands. /// Isaiah 59:15-18 (Berean Study Bible)

When we put on the Armor of God, we are putting on the Lord Jesus Christ! What can defeat you clothed in the Lord Jesus? You make a decision to walk in truth. You make a decision to accept the righteousness of God. You make a decision to walk in the path of the gospel of wholeness. You make a decision to apply faith to every attack. You make a decision to apply deliverance to every thought. You make a decision to take the Word of God and attack the enemy with it when he attacks you. And, when you need strength, you make a decision to pray in the Spirit and trust the Spirit to intercede according to God’s will for you.

To win your battle, you make your stand in the Armor of God. There is no plan “B” – no going back – no compromise.
