How Much Does Your Worship Cost?

Speaker:
Passage: John 12:1-8
Service Type:

Tonight’s study is a companion one to Sunday’s “Baptism of Greatness.” The place our study takes place tonight is Bethany – one of Jesus’ favorites places to stay when in Jerusalem. The town is located just outside the city limits. Bethany means: “poor house” or “house of affliction”. It was here that one of the most beautiful examples of worship took place. The act we are speaking of took place in the house of Simon the leper. The law required that those with leprosy live separate from others explaining why his house was in Bethany. John’s account tells us that Lazarus lived in Bethany along with his sisters Mary and Martha. What did Jesus do for Lazarus just before this story? It is possible that Simon was the father of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. To understand the act of worship performed here one must know the value of the perfume used. We are told that the perfume was oil of spikenard, a very costly imported perfume worth a year’s wages, which begs the question of how much does your worship cost you?
