Gifts & Calling // Part 6

Passage: John 10:27
Service Type:

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. /// John 10:27

Recently, we have been talking about operating in our gifts and calling. Each of us have been given spiritual gifts to use in the work of the Lord. Each of us is called to do the work of the ministry. The pathway to the fulfillment of our ministry leads straight up the mountain of communion. Our most fundamental purpose is to know God. Once we climb the mountain of Presence and become people who spend time knowing God through His Word and prayer, then God points out the specific mountain or destiny that He has given to each one of you.

Last week was for mountain climbers. We discussed the primary ways in which God speaks to His people. Today, we’ll look at some clues as to how you will know the voice of God. Just because you climb the mountain of God’s Presence doesn’t mean that you will never hear another voice other than His. Take Jesus for example: when spending time in the desert communing with His Father, He heard the voice of the devil seeking to deceive Him. Someone may be saying, “Okay, now that’s it! I don’t want to hear the voice of the devil! I’m staying at the bottom of the mountain of the Presence!” But listen, you hear the voice of the devil at the bottom of the mountain or anywhere you decide to go. Going to the top of the mountain causes you to be able to discern between the voices speaking to you – to know their origin. Discernment is key because there will be several voices speaking to you in life – to lead you. What voices will we hear?

  1. Demonic – originating from the kingdom of darkness
  2. Fleshly – originating from your own nature
  3. Worldly – originating from the nature of the world

Satan loves to disguise his voice as the voice of God. He wants to gain a position of authority by sowing lies into your life that are received by you because you believe them to be truth. Your own fleshly nature will speak to you. You will hear voices with the motivations and goals of the world speaking to you. How can you tell the difference?

  1. The voice of the Spirit will always tell you to follow the teachings of the Bible.

  2. The voice of the Spirit will always lead you into actions that glorify the Father.

  3. The voice of the Spirit will always lead you into actions birthed out of the love of God.

  4. The voice of the Spirit will always tell you the truth about yourself.

  5. The voice of the Spirit is always redemptive toward you.

  6. The voice of the Spirit will always lead you to model Jesus.

  7. The voice of the Spirit will never compromise truth for you.

Hearing Aids:
  •       Use scripture to define scripture. Don’t take scripture out of context.
  •       Seek confirmation on words of “change”. Out of the mouth of two or three witnesses every word is established as coming from God.
  •       If you don’t know, don’t go. Once you know – go!
  •       Words from someone else that are brand new to you, get confirmed from the Spirit.
  •       A word from God will be a “now” word – a “future” word or a confirming word.
As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. /// Isaiah 55:10-11 (NIV)
