The End of American Christianity

Bible Text: Jeremiah 6:16, 19 | Speaker: Parkey Cobern | Series: Standalone Sermons | There are times in which the church must make some things clear out of love and concern. This teaching is one of those. Before we jump in, let’s read this scripture:

16 Thus says the Lord: “Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
19 Hear, O earth! Behold, I will certainly bring calamity on this people—the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not heeded My word nor My law, but rejected it.’” /// Jeremiah 6:16 & 19 (NKJV)

We are at the end of what we could call “American Christianity”. What is “American Christianity?” “American Christianity” is the state of having Christianity and all that goes along with it as part of American culture. Now, we still speak of Christianity and have Christians in our nation, but having Christianity as an influencer in our culture, along with the priority of church attendance, Bible knowledge, and the influence of Christian ethics upon society is no longer a priority in this land.

It’s safe to say that most of those in our land who claim Christianity as their religion don’t prioritize the claims of Christianity in daily life. For many, this is terrible news. It causes fear and anger and discouragement. But, another good thing is happening pursuant to the decline of American Christianity. The good thing that is happening along with the decline of American Christianity is the rise of New Testament Christianity! You see, when Christianity ceases to be the primary influence in our nation, then our nation becomes pagan. Much of the Christianity that is claimed in our culture by people is polluted by self- interest, other belief systems, and ignorance of the Bible. So, when you dismiss the teachings of the Bible or pollute them with the flesh or pagan beliefs, they join together with unbelief to produce what we are currently experiencing in our nation. The newest hip system to follow is called “progressivism”.

Doesn’t sound so bad – does it? But in America, Progressivism has become infected by humanism.

Humanism has infected every aspect of human culture. It is now the religion of America and the primary influencer of American culture. With this as our influence, we will continue to see people act as their own god. We will see individual determination of right and wrong. We will see brokenness and sin cloaked in a belief in goodness. And, we will see a culture where people perpetrate individual acts of  judgment and selfishness upon themselves and others. But, the good news is this: the death of American Christianity allows for the birth of New Testament Christianity!

Therefore, the influence of the Scripture and the Holy Spirit is more pronounced and visible when it is practiced in its purity than it has ever been in our nation because the darkness around us makes the light more visible. We have been praying for a return to the Bible – a return to Christianity as evidenced in the book of Acts, the Gospels, and the Epistles. God is answering our prayer! We can no longer approach our outreach to this nation as outreach to a wayward Christian people. We must now approach outreach as ministering to a people to whom the things of God are foreign in knowledge and character.

For us to fulfill our calling in this hour – as individual believers and as God’s church, we must return to the practices and loves of the early believers or our attempts will fall woefully short of conversion in word and power! We must become people of the presence of God! We must become familiar with the Word of God and the power of God! Nothing short of purity and power is going to be enough to save this land!

18 For who has stood in the counsel of the Lord, and has perceived and heard His word? Who has marked His word and heard it?
21 I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran. I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in My counsel, and had caused My people to hear My words, then they would have turned them from their evil way and from the evil of their doings. /// Jeremiah 23:18, 21 (NKJV)

Pure, unadulterated word with power is all that will change this land. When given as God directs, change is possible! Those who are doing this are going to stick out because of the results. Are you ready to stick out?
