Armor of God // Part 6

Passage: Ephesians 6:10-18
Service Type:

It is God’s will that you be victorious in the battles of life. He not only desires it but has taken steps to equip you for that victory. There are four things that each of us must do to take hold of our victory:

  1.     Be strong in the Lord
  2.     Put on the whole armor of God
  3.     Know who your enemy is
  4.     Pray

We’ve been talking about the armor of God – what it is, why it is important, and how to put it on. Today, we move on the another important part of our spiritual armor which covers a vital part of our life – our head. You may remember the picture we saw last week of the example of a Roman Legion cohort. This week, let’s look at a slightly different picture, one with a group of soldiers using swords with their shields. Last week, we spoke of how the Roman legionnaires fought as a unit. Together, they were a formidable fighting force. We saw that the shield of the Roman soldier almost covered his entire body. But, for the legionnaire to be able to fight, he must be able to see. Therefore, the legionnaire’s head was seen over his shield and was exposed to potential strikes by the enemy. Let’s look at this from a spiritual standpoint.

Once you are saved, most of the attack of the enemy are focused on something that is vital to your survival which resides in your head. Your brain or mind. If the enemy cannot accomplish the goal of sending you to hell then he wants to render you ineffective at glorifying Jesus. So, he attacks your mind with thoughts that contradict the truth of your wholeness in Christ. Let’s begin here: If you are saved, YOU have to know it!

The enemy loves to attack believers with doubts about their salvation and doubts about God’s intentions toward them. If you are equipped with a Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God, what do you think the enemy’s sword is? Doubt, Confusion, Lies! This is the primary weapon the enemy can use against you personally. If Satan can get you to doubt God or the reality of His salvation in your life, then he can get you to drop your sword, drop your shield and then you are a sitting duck for his strike against you.

With the shield of faith in place and as we fight together as a unit, there is little area for a death blow. If you fight effectively, your head is one of the few exposed areas. If Satan can’t get to your heart, he’ll attack your mind to get you to your faith. Once you drop your shield, he can strike your heart. Many defeats begin with a blow to a believer’s mind! The good news is that you have the mind of Christ! The man with the mind of Christ can rightly judge things. And, since that judgment is true, he is not subject to other judgments! We don’t exalt other judgments above Christ’s! We don’t try and instruct Him! We have His mind and we trust His Words!

So, when the enemy tells you a lie, it bounces off your helmet of the knowledge of salvation and you strike back with the Sword of the Spirit! If the enemy strikes at your mind in battle, say something like this: “I am a child of God! He covers my head! I have the mind of Christ! I judge every evil thought and I take it captive! The battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into my hands!”
