Armor of God // Part 3
Bible Text: Ephesians 6:10-18 | Speaker: Parkey Cobern | Series: Armor of God | God is invested in your success. Now, to understand this, you must understand God’s definition of success. God’s definition of success can be found in 1 John 2. God has equipped you to be successful in fulfilling the will of God for your life. Do be successful in life, one much approach life with intention. You must be intentional – deliberate about your pursuits or you won’t end up at the desired destination.
There are things that God has provided for our success and we must be intentional about joining ourselves to those things. Ephesians lays out four things we must be intentional about to ensure success:
Be strong in the Lord
Put on the whole armor of God.
Know who your enemy is.
We’ve begun discussing the armor of God – what it is and how to put it on. Last week, we looked at the belt of truth. This week, we will look at the breastplate of righteousness. We have no righteousness of our own that will be successful against our enemy, the devil. The righteousness needed is imputed or imparted to us. It is the righteousness of Jesus Christ and it is given to us by faith is His finished work. We don’t depend upon our ability to do right – we depend upon the ability of the Holy Spirit to live through us. The Holy Spirit has been sent to release the kingdom of God within us and to display the wonderful nature of our God!
You will notice that the breastplate covers the upper torso of the warrior. It covers organs vital to survival like the heart and lungs. Just as your heart pumps blood in the natural, so your heart where Jesus sits enthroned a Lord pumps the benefits of the blood of Jesus throughout your life. Deuteronomy 12:23 tells us that “life is in the blood”. Jesus’ life is in you. His life is righteous so you fight the enemy in the life of Jesus and therefore, in His righteousness. Remember when David encountered Goliath on the battlefield? Goliath taunted David according to David’s attributes. But, David responded by telling Goliath that he was not fighting with ordinary weaponry but that he would defeat Goliath in the Name of the Lord. You are doing the same!
The breastplate also covers the warrior’s lungs. We live by the breath in our lungs. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit entered the believers. What entered them was described as a “wind”. Ezekiel 37 tells us the story of the Spirit breathing upon the slain of Israel and they lived and stood on their feet as an exceeding great army. Your heart is brand new in Christ. The blood of Jesus bought His righteousness for you. The Holy Spirit lives within you. Therefore, when you take the field against your enemies, it is not as the old person you used to be or as one who fights in his own strength. You take the field in the armor of God – dressed in the Lord Jesus Christ. The breastplate of righteousness protects you against the close quarter knife attacks of shame and doubt. These attacks cannot pierce the righteousness of Christ!
How do put on the breastplate of righteousness? Say something like this: “God, You gave me as a free gift Your righteousness, imparted to me by the blood of Jesus. The Holy Spirit lives within me. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus my Lord!” If the enemy challenges this, tell him: “You come against me with accusations and observations concerning my past and my humanity, but I come against you in the Name of the Lord of Host!”
Remember the belt of truth? The truth is you are made righteous by the blood of Jesus! You now have your vital organs covered. Next week, we examine your battle stance.
