“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” Colossians 3:16, NKJV
John Wesley was powerfully used by God to shake the nation of England in the 18th century. He traveled approximately 250,000 miles, mostly on horseback, and preached more than 40,000 sermons, often experiencing the awesome power of God.
Listen to this excerpt from his journal after preaching in Bristol on Monday, May 21, 1739:
“One, and another, and another was struck to the earth; exceedingly trembling at the presence of His power. Others cried with a loud and bitter cry, ‘What must we do to be saved?’”
Considering such powerful experiences with God, it is very interesting that John Wesley loved the Scriptures and regarded the Word of God as his highest authority. He expressed his deepest desire in these words: “Let me be a man of one book.”
Experiences of God’s power are wonderful, and we need to treasure those we have had while remaining hungry and open for more. Yet what should take center stage in our lives is the Word of God.
The Bible encourages us not to grow weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9). One of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself is to spend time in the Word daily.
The Word feeds us, directs us, comforts us, and reveals God to us. We should give God’s Word plenty of room in our lives.
If you find reading difficult, or if you are tired or sick and become drowsy, make use of an audio Bible. Either way, just make sure you are filled with the Word daily. As you become a person of one book, you will experience more of God’s power at work—Word and Spirit go hand in hand!
Father, thank You for the amazing gift of Your Word. Help me always to prioritize Your Word above everything else that seeks my attention. Make me a one-book person! Amen.
