You Reap What You Sow—Two2Grow, Thursday, October 15

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” Galatians 6:7 NIV
Why should you keep at it, resisting temptation and strive for a Christlike life? Especially when we know that we are fallen and will fail at some point anway? The answer is in today’s text. The actions and choices we make have consequences. God looks at our actions as seed that will bring a harvest.
I haven’t sown many literal seeds in my life. In priarmy school we sowed crasse in class and watched it grow. That’s about as far as my knowledge of seeds go. But I know one thing: the harvest doesn’t come the same day or the next. It takes some time.
This gap between sowing and reaping can trick us. We can think that just because there is no immediate consequence of my sin, I can keep doing it. Not knowing that a harvest is in the making, it just hasn’t materialized yet.
I’ve heard from several people who have made a mess of their life that they started by making small compromises but when they still still felt the presence of God even though they sinned, they thought that it couldn’t be that bad and they kept walking that road. It could be flirting with someone when you are already married (or the other person is). In the beginning it feels fun and innocent but those seeds are powerful and later on you reap a harvest of adoltery. Or you might start gambling, thinking you have things under control, only to find yourself struggling with an addiction.
Let’s be intentional of the seeds we are sowing. We want to sow words and actions that glorify Jesus and make us look forward to the harvest.
Father I want my life to honor you. Help me to sow seeds that bring a blessed harvest. Amen.
