What’s Your Smell? – Two2Grow, May 16

Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume. And who is adequate for such a task as this? 2 Corinthians 2:15–16 NLT
Did you know that spiritually speaking you carry a certain smell? Paul writes about how we as followers of Jesus are to carry the “aroma of Christ” that brings pleasure to God and brings eternity to mind in the people we meet.
There is something interesting with smells. We don’t have to say or do anything, we just carry it around us; our odor is part of us. So what kind of spiritual aroma do you effuse to God and those around you? When you enter your work place in the morning or meet up with friends at a coffee shop, what’s your smell?
Not every believer brings the aroma of Christ! Rather many of us carry an aroma of anger and bitterness arising from past pains and disappointments. Or we carry a smell of arrogance and pride rooted in achievements and ambitions. Some carry an aroma of shame and self-depreciation often connected with a poor self-image and deep-seated fears.
Instead of all those ugly smells of negativity and darkness, your call is to carry the fragrance of heaven. Think of the perfume of heaven as a beautiful mix of faith, hope, and love.
Pray today that Jesus will pour the Holy Spirit on you so that you get washed from the smell of your sins and your broken past and instead get anointed with the sweet fragrance of Jesus and God’s new world. People will notice the difference and God will be glorified!
Jesus, purify me today from the foul smell of this fallen world so that I may carry the fragrance of heaven.
